Sustainability & Environment
ARC seeks to improve business sustainability by valuing environmental, social and economic considerations in its decision-making. ARC is committed to pursuing a high standard of environmental management throughout its operations. ARC strives for continual improvement of environmental performance, the efficient use of resources, and the minimisation or prevention of pollution at world’s best practice rates.
Recycled SteelThe good news is that, in Australia, current steel recycling rates from construction and industrial sources are close to 90%. This equates to around 2.5M tonnes of recycled steel produced every year. These figures demonstrate that the Australian steel industry is currently recovering scrap steel at world’s best practice rates. ARC are a proud contributor to these impressive statistics. A very high proportion of the steel used in manufacturing ARC reinforcing products is recycled scrap steel produced in an EAF. |

Steelmaking and the EnvironmentIn simplified terms there are two basic production processes by which steel is made; the Blast Furnace/Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BF/BOS) route, which makes ‘new’ steel mainly utilising iron ore as feed and the Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) process, which makes steel mainly by recycling scrap steel that already exists. Production of steel through the EAF process consumes fewer natural resources and significantly less energy than steel produced through the BF/BOS route.
